La marinière

Stripes. Everyone knows by now that we love them here. So when we came across this vintage piece, we couldn't resist. La marinière, the iconic Saint James striped shirt, was originally designed for the French navy, with precisely 21 stripes symbolizing Napoleon's victories. Coco Chanel introduced the shirt around 1917 in her resort collection, making it a fashion staple, and it's never really gone away. Le marinière was the favorite shirt of Pablo Picasso, Brigitte Bardot, Jane Birkin, and others, and in the 1980s, the stripe became Jean-Paul Gaultier's trademark. This Saint James shirt is the Minquiers Moderne and is made of sturdy cotton in the classic blue and white stripe. Ideal for those days when you're feeling a little homesick for France.
